Yep, Telstra has the best mobile phone coverage in Tassie, although Optus and their re-sellers are catching up, but not enough to just have an Optus connection in Tassie, especially if you are outside the main cities & towns.
If you do have Optus or any other provider (Virgin Mobile, Vodafone etc), best go and get a cheap pre-paid Telstra sim card and a phone designed with good regional coverage (blue tick). Regional coverage is very important if you have a bingle in the bush and need to call for help as often you'll get Telstra on top of features, hills etc.
We personally run Optus connected smartphone for 95% of our needs and have a redirect to old school Telstra blue tick phone when Optus is out of range.
